Remember “The Blob” from around 2015? It was a massive marine heatwave that cooked the Pacific from Alaska to Mexico for nearly two years, scrambling ecosystems in the process. Warmer waters caused a mass decline of krill, shrimp-like creatures that form the base of the food web, causing everything above it to starve. It also fueled harmful algae blooms, poisoning shellfish and killing marine mammals. Species shifted north, tropical newcomers replacing the usual locals. One researcher described it like “looking out the window and seeing a macaw fly by.” Our co-founders were on assignment for NatGeo documenting The Blob when they found themselves on the frontlines of Washington State’s wildfires.
