We’re celebrating the 10-year anniversary of the successful recovery of three California Channel Island fox subspecies, which were removed from the Endangered Species List in 2016 after partners came together to save them from the brink of extinction! The de-listing of island foxes on the three northern Channel Islands, marked the fastest recovery of a mammal in the history of the landmark Endangered Species Act. When populations of these small, endemic foxes plummeted in the late 1990s, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and partners launched a multifaceted recovery effort. The three subspecies were listed as endangered in 2004. Efforts included removing introduced feral pigs, reestablishing bald eagles to their historic range and relocating golden eagles, whose predation on foxes had pushed the three subspecies to the brink of extinction.
