Trump said the idea comes because the U.S. does not expect to be doing “much business with Ontario any longer,” following the latest breakdown in trade negotiations and growing tensions between the two countries. Lake Ontario is one of the five Great Lakes and is shared by Ontario and New York, meaning the international border runs directly through the lake. Trump’s comments do not mean the lake has officially been renamed. The proposal comes after Trump previously renamed the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America” for U.S. federal use in 2025.
