❗️BMW’s M badge has evolved from the mid-engine M1 supercar into one of the most recognizable performance families in automotive history. It started with the M1 in 1978, BMW Motorsport’s first ground-up production car, built around a 277-hp inline-six and produced through 1981. The M5 followed in the mid-1980s and helped establish the formula of combining genuine sports-car performance with a practical luxury sedan, while the E30 M3 arrived in 1986 and became one of BMW M’s defining motorsport-bred icons. The M6 lineage traces back to the 1984 M635CSi, disappeared and returned more than once, and eventually concluded with the third-generation M6 in 2018.
