A few decades ago, in the bustling street called Jew Town in Kochi, Kerala, every house had a Jewish family. But today, the city’s Jewish population has dwindled. Elias Josephai, a caretaker at a centuries-old synagogue, has seen this change over his lifetime. The 70-year-old has spent decades restoring his much-loved childhood synagogue. Josephai has chosen to stay in India despite his family’s move to Israel. There are others preserving this legacy too – Thaha Ibrahim, a Muslim shopkeeper, had a close relationship with Sarah Cohen, a beloved Jewish matriarch of the neighbourhood. Today, he runs her Jewish embroidery shop on Synagogue Lane, and keeps her memory alive. bbcnewsindia #jewishstories #india #jewishlife
