After Shiyazh Pete signed with the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent after the NFL draft, he became the first-ever player in NFL history to represent the Navajo Nation, a Native American reservation with a large presence across the southwest U.S. Pete was an all-district player in high school after switching from judo to football, but his senior season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He later walked on at New Mexico State, playing four seasons before transferring to Kentucky. Thousands of Navajo Nation supporters made the trip to Glendale, AZ for the Cowboys preseason game against the Cardinals on Saturday. When he enter in the fourth quarter and threw a key block on a touchdown drive, the crowd erupted, giving him a standing ovation he says he’ll never forget. “I saw hope and courage. It’s definitely etched in the history books,” Pete said postgame.
