On August 1, 1960, Lloyd Center—a new, massive shopping center in Northeast Portland—opened its doors to the public. This midcentury modern cathedral to American consumer culture housed more than 70 stores, with larger department names at its cardinal anchors and smaller shops mixed in along the “malls,” all connecting at a then-outdoor ice skating rink. On Lloyd Center Mall’s last day, August 8, 2026, a raucous crowd of thousands again filled its halls to pay final tribute to a space that contained countless memories of teenhood flirtations, first jobs, afternoons spent whiling away the hours, and adventures in accessorizing (even shoplifting).
