In 2023, Multnomah County filed a $52 billion lawsuit against more than a dozen oil and gas companies, seeking relief for the local impacts of climate change. Earlier this summer, the fossil fuel defendants argued to get the case dismissed, arguing the county lacks jurisdiction over their global emissions. The hearing came amid a nationwide push to grant fossil fuel companies legal immunity from climate litigation.
