Here are some photos taken over the last three months as crews continue demolition of Austin's iconic Frank Erwin Center, aka “The Drum." In the last week, crews have started stripping away the exterior walls using a concrete crusher, so I returned to the site today to catch up on the progress. The Drum is the former home of the Texas men’s and women’s basketball teams and a popular concert venue that hosted artists including David Bowie, Taylor Swift, Van Halen, Pink Floyd, Prince and more dating back to 1977 before its eventual closure in May 2022. It was replaced by the Moody Center, located just 3 blocks to the north. It also hosted NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament games in 18 seasons, and the Final Four twice. The Longhorn women finished the first-ever undefeated run in NCAA history, capped off with a national championship in 1986 — the first of six seasons in which Texas led the nation in attendance.
