The hardest race on Earth is in the middle of Michigan. On the last Saturday in July, canoers from all over the world gather in Grayling and paddle their way to Oscoda. For 14 hours, through the night, racers navigate fallen branches, tight turns, hydroelectric dams, and other boats. Along the way, 50,000 fans pile on the banks to cheer them on. There are other canoe races, but the longer ones are divided into stages or are done during the day. Combine the length, darkness, and no rest, and it’s the most grueling spectator sport on Earth.
