August 25, 2026, Saxony, Leipzig, Germany: Hera, a female penguin, devours a fish at the Leipzig Zoo. One week before the opening, the newly arrived Humboldt penguins are settling into their new ‘Tierra del Fuego’ exhibit. The aquatic world for seals, penguins, and seabirds is scheduled to open on September 1. While the first animals are settling in, final work on landscaping and the commissioning of the technical systems is still underway. The zoo has invested 49.5 million euros in the elaborately designed exhibit, which features an underwater tunnel approximately 100 meters long and a water basin with a capacity of five million liters.
