Ever wonder why produce slows down in August? It’s not that farmers are falling behind, It's plant biology. When temperatures climb into the 100s, plants shift into survival mode, putting their energy into staying alive instead of producing fruit. Flowers drop, pollination slows and growth stalls, even for healthy, well cared for plants. That’s the lull we see most Oklahoma summers and this one has been particularly hot! Once it cools off (or night temperatures are below 80 degrees), everything changes. Summer crops start producing again right as the cool season crops come in, making fall one of the most productive stretches of the year. This season of abundance continues until the first freeze, some years as late as November!
