I keep a running list in my head of where I thought I’d be by now. It’s a bad habit and I’m working on it. Because when I was 13 I’d read the pages in Glamour dedicated to women making a difference in the world, or giving voice to people in overlooked corners of the globe, and I told my parents that I’d do that one day too. Travel to the places most people never think to go. Learn about different cultures. Tell stories that move people the way those ones moved me. Move to Africa. Maybe I thought it would look a little different or I’d have a partner by my side. Maybe I thought it would’ve been a bit easier. But hey, those childhood dreams turned out to be good guidance, and figuring out the “how” was always going to be the hard (& fun) part.
