“Whitney Biennial 2026” co-curators Marcela Guerrero and Drew Sawyer walk us through “Hyundai Terrace Commission: Kelly Akashi” under a softly lit New York sky.
Akashi’s glass recreation of their home studio chimney glows on a cloudy day, and the hand-crafted glass bricks stretch across the Whitney Museum’s fifth-floor terrace. “I love the way it looks like part of the cityscape up here when you look out over it,” Sawyer says.
The bricks from the sculpture spill onto a pathway that winds through the exhibition space, reminding Guerrero of “those bridges that connect us to the foundation of who we are.” The pathway connects the sculpture to "Inheritance (Distressed)," a steel relief inspired by heirloom doilies, and echoes throughout the rest of the exhibition.
