There are golf courses that play great, and then there are courses that are just ridiculously pleasing to the eye. Union League National belongs firmly in the second category. What you’re looking at in Cape May Courthouse, New Jersey, is essentially a completely manufactured landscape. After the Union League acquired the former Sand Barrens Golf Club in 2017, Dana Fry and Jason Straka transformed the relatively flat property into something almost unrecognizable—taking inspiration from places like Pine Valley and Calusa Pines. And the scale of that transformation is wild: More than 1.6 MILLION cubic yards of earth were moved. The result is 27 holes—Grant, Meade and Sherman—that look almost sculpted for a camera. Huge elevation changes. Brilliant green turf against exposed sand. Water everywhere. Massive contours. And seemingly one ridiculous view after another.
