When his government told him not to issue visas to Jewish refugees fleeing the Nazis, he chose to follow his conscience instead. For hours each day, he wrote visas by hand, knowing his decision could cost him his career and put his own future at risk. He never knew the full impact of what he was doing. But because he chose humanity over obedience, thousands lived and tens of thousands of their descendants exist today.
