Section 377 was interpreted as targeting homosexuality—but the language of the law never actually said that. Madhavi Menon unpacks why reading down Section 377 was significant for everyone, not only for the LGBTQ+ community. The law referred to “carnal acts against the order of nature,” a phrase that was then interpreted by police, lawyers and judges as referring to homosexuality. And that interpretation had very real consequences. Because when the law becomes a tool through which the state can police people's private lives, its impact goes far beyond the words written on the page.
