What stories are still waiting beneath the sea? 🌊 More than 500 years ago, the waters of La Isabela, on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic, witnessed intense maritime activity, including the expeditions of Christopher Columbus and the beginnings of European presence in the Caribbean. Today, traces of this history may still lie beneath the surface. UNESCO and the Dominican Republic, with the support of Spain (AECID and the Ministry of Culture), are working together to research and protect the underwater cultural heritage of the Historic and Archaeological Site of Villa La Isabela. Using new technologies alongside historical sources and local knowledge, archaeologists and experts are studying the seabed to better understand the history of the bay. They are also assessing the risks facing this heritage, including climate change, and identifying ways to safeguard it for the future.
