I think this is one of the biggest gifts of raising our kids with more than one language. It’s not really about being able to say they’re bilingual or trilingual. It’s about moments like this. Watching my daughter arrive in Belgium and just… join in. Running off with her cousins, understanding what they’re saying, making jokes, playing, figuring things out together without needing someone to translate the world around her. Because when your family lives across an ocean, you’re already working against distance. The visits are never as frequent as you’d like, and there are so many everyday moments you miss. Language is one small way we can make that distance feel a little smaller. Dutch gives her a direct relationship with this side of her family. Not through us. Not through translation. Hers.
