🎥 + 💭: matthewunderwater “A rare beluga whale sighting in a Faroe Islands fjord, more than a thousand kilometres south of where it should be. Belugas are Arctic animals. Greenland, Svalbard, Arctic Canada. Not here in the Faroes. This is the first beluga recorded here in 30 years, and this individual has been spotted a few times over the course of this year. We don't know how it got here, or why. It looked healthy, which counts for something, but belugas live their entire lives in pods, surrounded by family, and one alone this far from home is not a good sign. We spent the whole afternoon watching it move up and down the fjord, unhurried, completely at ease. Even though I worry about why it was there by itself, it was one of the best marine encounters of my life, and certainly the best where I wasn't even in or on the water.
