Mary Wilden went into Worksop workhouse in the 1830s with nowhere else to go. Once inside, whoever ran the ward began to hurt her — long enough for ulcers to form, long enough for lice to take hold, until she was found lying in her own filth. By 1839 she was dead. A writer investigated and published every wound. The inquest still called it natural causes.
