The Galveston Daily News put its construction cost at $14,000 — a substantial sum for the time. Then came September 8, 1900. The house survived the Great Storm and remained standing, beginning a long life through hurricanes, changing families, a stint as a convalescent home, periods of disrepair and remarkable restorations. One later member of the Stubbs family remembered its windows opening nearly to the floor, 15-foot ceilings, and the summer breeze sweeping through the house — “Not very much for privacy but comfortable and effective natural air conditioning.” Nearly 140 years later, this elaborate Galveston landmark still stands — and it just hit the market.
