Oxfam studied 50 of the world's richest billionaires and counted emissions linked to their private jets, superyachts, and investments. The investment part is enormous. Nearly 40% of the investments analyzed were in highly polluting sectors such as oil, mining, shipping and cement. Oxfam estimated that the average billionaire's investment emissions were about 340 times greater than the emissions from their jets and yachts combined.
So the "90 minutes" shows that, on average, the carbon emissions associated with these billionaires' investments and luxury transport accumulated at a rate equivalent to an average person's entire lifetime emissions in roughly 90 minutes. It is a simpler way of showing how wealth can translate into vastly larger carbon footprints and, especially through investments, influence over high emitting industries.
