Feminism is supposedly built on equality.
So let’s talk about what equality actually means: equal standards of accountability.
Look at the Lindsay Clancy case.
She is accused of killing her three children. Both sides in the trial agree that she killed them. The dispute is whether her mental state made her legally responsible for what she did.
And yet hundreds of women have rallied outside the courthouse in support of her, with messages like “She Needed Help” and “Peace For Lindsay.”
Now imagine the roles were reversed.
Imagine a man sexually assaulted a woman, unalived her, and then his defense was:
“My testosterone and mental health made me do it.”
Would people respond with the same level of sympathy?
Would thousands of people rally outside the courthouse talking about how men need better mental-health support?
Of course not.
And that's where I think we need to have an honest conversation.
Mental illness can explain behavior.
Trauma can explain behavior.
