People sometimes assume that after enough years in medicine, death becomes easier. I don't think it does. Experience teaches you what to do. You learn how to stay calm, support a family, complete what needs to be done and continue caring for the patients who still need you. But being able to function through something does not mean you stop feeling it. Every death is someone’s parent, partner, child, sibling or friend. Every situation is different, and some stay with you far longer than you expect. The danger comes when healthcare workers become so accustomed to carrying those experiences quietly that nobody asks what they are doing with everything they have absorbed. We should not wait until someone is exhausted, detached or unable to continue before we offer support. Regular conversations, trusted colleagues and space to process difficult experiences should be part of the job, not something people have to search for when they are already struggling. #DoctorLife #HealthcareWor...
