The woman behind this incredibly satisfying book-scanning process is Eliza Zhang, who joined the Internet Archive in San Francisco back in 2010. 📚✨
By 2021, she had already scanned more than 3 million pages, along with 14,000 foldouts and 18,000 individual items, most of them books.
Her setup uses a custom-built Scribe scanning machine. She operates the glass with a foot pedal while two cameras photograph each page with incredible precision.
Why do it manually? Many old, rare, and fragile books can easily be damaged by automated scanning systems. So every page is carefully handled and captured by hand.
Eliza’s goal is simple: zero errors, giving readers the clearest and most accurate digital versions possible.
Sometimes, preserving the past takes an incredible amount of patience. 📖❤️
