Recent work, Beijing City Library (Photography: vromerophoto ), Beijing has never been a city that does things quietly. In Tongzhou, snohetta has created something unexpected: a library that feels less like a building and more like a landscape. Conceived as “a forest of knowledge,” the Beijing City Library unfolds around an interior valley, with terraces rising like hills and slender columns opening into a canopy of ginkgo leaves. Books are everywhere, integrated into an architecture where landscape and structure seem to become one. In a country moving at extraordinary speed, here are 75,000 square metres devoted to an increasingly rare luxury: slowing down. No spectacle required. No invitation needed. Just walk in, find a place beneath the trees, open a book, and disappear for a while.
