The California State Senate Appropriations Committee voted to advance Assembly Bill 713, which could guarantee equitable access to on-campus employment for all students at public higher education institutions regardless of immigration status.
The bill was passed by the state Assembly in January and will now advance to the Senate floor. It must pass the full legislature by Monday, Aug. 31, to be implemented.
The bill would prohibit the UC system, California State University system and California Community Colleges from disqualifying students from eligible positions due to failure to provide proof of federal work authorization.“Unauthorized noncitizens” are ineligible for a federal work authorization, according to the U.S. Congress website.
