Michael Vick is entering Year Two at Norfolk State with a deeper appreciation for HBCU football — and plenty to say ahead of the Spartans’ season opener. During the Aug. 24 MEAC coaches media call, Vick pushed back on the idea that HBCU football is somehow a lower level of competition, saying, “I beg to differ.” He also reflected on what he learned during Norfolk State’s 1-11 season and how he has changed as a head coach. Vick also named Dale J. Bailey as Norfolk State’s starting quarterback, explaining that Bailey won the job through an open competition that also included Reginald “Reggie” Johnson. The season opener also comes with a personal storyline. Norfolk State will face Winston-Salem State, led by first-year head coach Torry Woodbury, who served on Vick’s staff at Norfolk State last season.
