For decades, Beaverton High School has opened and closed the school year by ringing an iconic-if-slightly-battered Liberty Bell lookalike that has long stood sentry outside the school in the Portland suburb’s compact downtown. Wednesday was no different — but the bell was just about the only thing unchanged as students streamed into a brand-new Beaverton High School on the first day of school.
