After seven years of planning for construction of a downtown pro soccer stadium and surrounding development, the city of Des Moines says its negotiations with developer the Krause Group are over. The city made the announcement in a news release on Wednesday, Aug. 26, saying that with a $12 million budget deficit projected for fiscal year 2028 and another $5 million gap in the next year, it "can no longer responsibly commit to providing funding for the proposed stadium district." A spokesperson for Krause Group, which had pressed for the commitment of more public funding for the project, told the Register the company was unaware of the city's decision.
