People who are homeless in Des Moines will have the option to store their belongings, including documents, in a secure locker on the city's north side as part of a temporary pilot program. Des Moines City Council on Monday, Aug. 24, unanimously approved a contract with St. Vincent de Paul to use its facility at 1426 Sixth Ave. to provide 12 gym-sized lockers with biometric locks for people who are homeless to access their personal property. People who are homeless point to the loss of their property, including vital documents like birth certificates and identification, as one of the several barriers to accessing shelter or housing, according to a study conducted by Drake University in 2022.
