On August 29, 1885, John L. Sullivan defeated Dominick McCaffrey to win what was considered the first official heavyweight boxing championship. This was the first major title fight fought using gloves and with 3 minute rounds. It took place in Chester Driving Park just outside Cincinnati, Ohio. Also from Cincinnati, Ohio? Our Washington hand press, manufactured in 1852, by the Charles Foster & Brother Company. For today, Channey letterpress printed a linoleum cut, made about 70 years ago, from the Al from New Jersey Collection. The image from the cut depicts two boxers in the middle of a round. This was printed with black rubber base ink using our Washington hand press. #SacHistoryMuseum #onthisday #cincinnati #boxing #museumtok
