In a press conference Monday, Mayor Zohran Mamdani reaffirmed that his administration is still undecided about AI policy for NYC schools.
Without Mamdani's policy announcement, city schools cannot purchase any more devices, since they risk these going against any potential policies about technology and AI in classrooms.
Compared to other school districts across the U.S., the New York City School District has moved very slowly on implementing AI tools for teaching and learning.
In June, a majority of New York City Council members urged the mayor and the schools chancellor to pause the use of artificial intelligence in the city’s schools.
No official policies have been announced yet, despite the school district's official semester start date being Sept. 10.
