Neighbors reported hearing rapid fire and seeing muzzle flashes in the darkness. San Carlos Apache police say officers responded to the New Moonbase neighborhood around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday after receiving reports that 15 to 20 rounds had been fired. Police allegedly found 20-year-old Julius Benavides outside a home holding a firearm. A department spokesperson said Benavides initially refused to cooperate, backed into the doorway and manipulated the weapon. One officer reportedly heard him chamber another round in the shadows. Benavides eventually tossed the weapon and surrendered. Officers searched the area and confirmed nobody had been injured. He was booked on multiple counts, including weapons misconduct, misuse of a firearm, disorderly conduct and interfering with an officer.
