In Bhutan, a tradition of carrying Buddhist teachings from place to place inside portable wooden shrines is being revived. After looking broadly at how art supports religious practice across the greater Himalayan region, we turn to one example from Bhutan: portable wooden shrines called tashi gomang. These miniature shrines often have many tiny doors and depict a wide variety of themes, including important moments in the life of the Buddha. Traveling storytellers known as manips carried them to public gatherings, opening their doors as they shared Buddhist teachings with gathered communities. Want to dive deeper?
