Australia just made one of the clearest distinctions yet in the AI music debate.
Starting next week, fully AI-generated songs will be excluded from the official ARIA charts and ARIA Awards.
But AI-assisted music is still allowed if humans remain meaningfully involved in the creative process, including writing the song and performing the lead vocals and main instruments.
That is the key distinction.
The issue is no longer simply whether AI was used. It is how much of the creative act still belongs to a human artist.
That line is going to matter more and more as AI-generated music gets better, cheaper and harder to distinguish from human-made work.
Australia may have just given the rest of the music industry a preview of where the rules are heading.
