There is a much bigger story hiding inside this chart than “AI usage is growing.”
AI is beginning to consume AI at enormous scale.
OpenRouter data shows agentic token usage rising from roughly 0.51 trillion tokens in February to 7.3 trillion by August, about 14× growth in six months.
Human driven usage grew about 2.8×.
Why such a huge difference?
Because an agent does not simply ask a question and wait for an answer.
It can plan a task, call a model, use a tool, evaluate the result, search again, modify its approach, maintain context and repeat the process dozens of times before the human ever sees the final output.
One human request can therefore trigger an entire chain of machine activity.
That has enormous implications.
The AI economy may increasingly be driven not by how many people are chatting with models, but by how much autonomous work machines are performing behind the interface.
That means the next major bottlenecks become inference capacity, memory, context managem...
