OpenAI is no longer satisfied with simply buying the infrastructure powering its models.
Its new Jalapeño inference chip reportedly delivers up to 1.9× greater efficiency and 3.6× lower latency than Nvidia Blackwell systems in early benchmarks.
And OpenAI says AI itself helped accelerate the chip’s development from initial design to manufacturing tapeout in just nine months.
Jalapeño is not an Nvidia killer. Not yet.
But that may be the wrong way to look at it.
OpenAI is building toward a future where the company controls far more of the AI stack itself, from the models and software all the way down to the silicon running them.
That changes the competitive landscape.
The next phase of the AI race will not be fought on models alone. It will be fought across compute, energy efficiency, networking, data centers and custom chips.
Vertical integration is becoming the new moat.
