Hector Arenas went from rejected applicant to Venue Operations Manager at the FIFA World Cup, in his home country.
He'd gone for a venue director role in one of the host cities. The interview went well. But when the call came saying he was unsuccessful, he figured that was it and his FIFA hopes were done for him.
Fast forward a year, and the same person who'd knocked him back picked up the phone, this time inviting him to interview for a newly opened role in Monterrey. And the rest is history.
He'd been turned away once. He stayed on their radar, kept building, and let the timing come to him.
