The No. 11-ranked Iowa field hockey team defeated No. 2-ranked North Carolina, 3-2, in their final match of the ACC Challenge on Sunday, moving their season record to 2-0. This marks the first time the Hawkeyes have beaten the Tar Heels since 2023.
Iowa quickly found itself down early after a goal 10 minutes in by North Carolina’s Sofia Ferri. Fourth-year Dionne van Aalsum, the Hawkeyes’ leading scorer, would then tie the match up, 1-1, just minutes later with her 67th career goal.
The Tar Heels found themselves back on top near the end of the first half, 2-1, after Molly Catchpole found the back of the net. This marked the second game in a row where the Hawkeyes trailed at halftime.
