Released at the height of her Eternal Sunshine Tour, Ariana Grande’s eighth studio album, “petal,” directly confronts the trials and tribulations of pop stardom with raw emotion and rage never heard before in her music.
While on the surface, lines like “sorry if i made me your type / yeah i i hate that i made you love me” evoke the idea that this is a breakup song, the later lines “you studied my crown / and borrowed my body” and “why you so hate to see women endure / is it really my fault / you gave me your hearts / of your own accord?” reveal that Grande is actually addressing the emotional toll of parasocial fans and public scrutiny.
Grande’s album “petal” is an open confrontation of the media’s hyperfixation on pop stars and the ridicule that artists face in their day-to-day lives.
