Researchers from the University of Oxford have demonstrated the first wireless quantum key distribution (QKD) system operating in the ultraviolet-C (UV-C) spectral region.
Most current wireless QKD systems rely on visible or infrared wavelengths, where background sunlight can easily overwhelm weak single-photon signals. By operating in the "solar-blind" UV-C band—where sunlight is naturally absorbed by Earth's ozone layer—the team achieved a clean signal with secure key rates exceeding 1 Mbit/s in laboratory tests.
Published in Optica Quantum, this advance offers a promising path toward secure outdoor quantum communications for financial transactions, healthcare data, and critical infrastructure even under direct daylight.
