WIN for grizzly bears: Following a legal challenge by the Center and our allies, the U.S. Forest Service has agreed to reassess how a massive logging project in Montana may harm grizzly bears.
Grizzly bears need vast, connected landscapes where they can roam, forage, den and raise cubs safely.
Meanwhile, this proposed logging project in the Bitterroot National Forest threatened to log, burn and bulldoze their home.
Besides logging 135,000 acres of the Bitterroot National Forest, the proposed project would wreak havoc with roads, prescribed burning, herbicide use, and other industrial activities.
The Forest Service and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service didn’t fully evaluate how all that could affect the sensitive grizzlies who live there — so we warned we’d sue.
Our legal challenge forced the agency to go back and address its failure.
