If we were to pass out awards to all the penguins of the world, the gentoo would win in two categories: fastest swimmer and best rock collector. They are in fact the fastest of all underwater swimming birds, reaching over 20 mph (32kmh) on their hunting excursions beneath the surface. Their speed and the velocity at which they exit the water helps overcome powerful waves so they can safely land, even if it takes a few tries. Their “rock collections” are actually how they build their nests. A gentoo penguin will present a female penguin with a pebble as a special courtship ritual that signals he wants to begin building a home for their soon-to-be-family. If his penguin partner accepts, they take on the task of building their little nursery together. So really they win in three categories: fastest swimmers, best rock collectors, cutest gift-givers.
