Everyone told us to get her back through the gate as fast as possible.
Consistency.
Routine.
Don’t let her fall behind.
Push through the resistance and it’ll break.
After everything else failed, we did the opposite. Purely on what my gut was telling me, and how things were actually going based on what the professionals had told us to do.
We slowed everything right down and let her body catch up before we asked for one single day back at school.
It was scared we were failing her. Because every piece of standard advice would have said we were making it worse.
Looking back now, I still can’t quite believe how far she’s come from those mornings.
I continue to research this, and now know that Dr Russell Kennedy, a physician, anxiety specialist and author, says the body has to settle before the mind can think clearly.
Always in that order.
