Roughly 16,000 same-sex married couples live in Virginia. Although their unions are recognized at the federal level, the state’s constitution has language banning same-sex marriages. A proposed constitutional amendment going to voters this fall could remove and replace that language with protections for married couples “regardless of their sex, gender, or race.” As part of VPM News’ Amending Virginia series, State Politics Reporter Jahd Khalil spoke with Richmond resident Chad Stewart about his same-sex marriage and his family’s concerns about legal recognition being taken away at the federal level.
