Because warm air is less dense than cool air, incoming light rays from the sky bend (refract) upward toward your eyes. Your brain assumes light always travels in a straight line, so it interprets those bent light rays as a reflection coming from the ground—creating the illusion of a shimmering lake. As you drive closer and the viewing angle sharpens, the bent light rays no longer reach your eyes, making the “water” instantly vanish into thin air.
