In the darkest corners of the earth and under the most difficult circumstances, people are willing to sacrifice their lives for others. These are the people who have kept and continue to keep hope alive in Syria and in its reconstruction. These are the people who worked to rescue children from under the rubble of destroyed buildings, who ran underground hospitals, and who carried aid through checkpoints to deliver food and medicine. In honor of World Humanitarian Day, we honor those who have lost their lives in service of others, and those who continue their humanitarian work in the face of adversity. Among those brave ones whose absence is felt are James Foley, Mazen Hamada, and Dr. Majd Kamalmaz, whose acts of bravery and resolution for Syria’s freedom will never be forgotten. August 19 also marks the anniversary of James Foley’s death in 2014 after he was abducted and held hostage.
