While being held hostage by Hamas, Or Levy says a mantra from another Israeli hostage, Hersh Goldberg-Polin, saved his life: “He who has a why can bear any how.”
Hersh had read it in “Man’s Search For Meaning,” a 1946 memoir by Nazi concentration camp survivor Viktor Frankl who’d paraphrased Friedrich Nietzsche’s famous line, “He who has a why to live can bear almost any how.”
Soon after he was freed, Levy got Hersh’s mantra tattooed on his arm.
Levy’s “why” was his son. “The only reason why I survived was him,” he tells Anderson Cooper.
